fridge feng shui

I’m not sure about the science behind this // but it seems true that when food is served in a matter that factors in aesthetics, people tend to savor instead of inhale.  I’m not sure where I heard this truth {I’m fairly certain // although embarrassed // I heard it on Oprah}.  Personally, I tend to slow down & enjoy my food when it is presented on a beautiful plate.  I take in not only the flavors, but the beauty in its presentation as well.  For this reason, I am in great need of feng shui’ing my fridge.  It’s currently a hot mess.  See here:

Not very aesthetically pleasing, eh?  I know.  So, I went out & purchased a few containers to beautify the ugly fridge that came with my apartment.  There is nothing I can do about its exterior mess {aside from personalizing w/ magnets} // so for now, I’ll make the most of what I have, & make it work on the inside.  I used this website {thank you Pinterest & mythirtyspot.com!} to find out the best way to store my fruits & veggies, & then I got to work.

Here is the after:

What I did:

  1. First, I cleaned out the fridge with a wet towel + disinfectant wipes & tossed expired food.  I placed a box of baking soda in the back corner to combat food smells.
  2. I purchased a couple of refrigerator organizers // Yes, they make those! {found in the kitchen storage section of Target; I couldn’t find it on the Target website, but the same brand is also on Amazon here}  Even though they are not large {which is great for a small fridge}, they added so much space in our fridge by the ability to stack them one on top of the other.  Our crisper {which, annoyingly, is not clear} has limited space, so these work perfectly for our fruits & vegetables.  I housed the cilantro & arugula in the built-in {unclear / arrg} crisper, while the other vegetables go on top in the aforementioned containers {as most require an open container for longevity}, & the fruits go in the bottom container {as most require a more closed container}. after5-key-and-arrow
  3. Again, I used this website to determine how to store fruits & vegetables the best way for preservation.  As suggested, I housed the berries in labeled brown paper bags.  Will I arrange them this way every single time? // probably not // but it’s a nice little experiment!after4-key-and-arrow
  4.  I purchased bowls {Obviously you don’t have to purchase these if you have some in your cupboards to spare!} & a butter dish from anthropologie to beautify my refrigerator while also organizing it.  I love these latte bowls for only $5 each {also available in more colors}!  The smaller bowls I purchased are great, too & come in even more patterns {see those here}.  The butter dish is large enough to house more than two sticks of butter + it’s aesthetically pleasing / very French / oui, oui! {see that here}.  I used a couple of antique sterling-silver egg holders that my mother gave me for extra eggs in the fridge’s built-in egg crate storage.after2-key-and-arrow
  5. I had already used Mason jars {seriously, I use these puppies for everything / food storage being the most obvious} to store some of the refrigerator items, but now these pretty + simple jars are much more prominent.  After purchasing the storage, it made organizing the fridge so much easier.  I simply lined items up in a way that everything became more visible {lined according to height} & of course, aesthetically pleasing.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
